Mayor Jim Watson opened an exhibit at the City Hall Art Gallery today, featuring the latest additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection. The exhibition, entitled Kaleidoscope: 2018 Additions to the City of Ottawa Art Collection, is on display at the City Hall Art Gallery between December 6, 2018 and January 30, 2019.

The exhibition features 68 artworks representing 43 artists. Nineteen of these artists are new to the Collection.

The kaleidoscope was selected as a symbol for this exhibit to highlight the diverse grouping of work and to encourage viewers to expand their awareness and see things in a new light.

In 2018, the City undertook a pilot project in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action. An Indigenous Liaison was engaged to work with artists in the Algonquin, Métis and Inuit communities in an effort to include more work by Indigenous artists into the City’s collection.

Facts

  • In 2018, 56 artworks by 33 artists were purchased, 11 artworks were donated and one site-specific permanent public art commission was completed.
  • Twenty of the artworks purchased in 2018 were created by Indigenous artists.
  • The City of Ottawa Art Collection is comprised of nearly 2,800 artworks created by more than 760 artists.
  • Pieces from the City of Ottawa Art Collection are on display in more than 170 public spaces across the city.

Quotes

“Investing in local arts and culture helps our city flourish creatively and economically and creates a vibrant, engaging city that attracts artists, residents and tourists. The addition of work from Indigenous artists reflects the City’s commitment toward nurturing its relationship with Algonquin, other First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities.”

Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa
