Music recording

I want to record sound music on my computer, by using the microphone. What software do I need? I am using XP, but I am considering about switch back to 98.

Would someone pease tell me what to do with it? Like, how to start, and blablabla.

Can I use WMP?

Nope, I don't think it has such a function, WMP can only rip audio cds to your computer but not record the sound from microphone...also, for a good quality, you'll need the function like noise canceling
