The City of Ottawa is temporarily reducing its broad volunteer callout, effective immediately. Additional volunteers are not required today and it is expected that a limited number of volunteers will be needed for specific tasks on Friday, May 3, and the upcoming weekend (Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5). A full complement of City of Ottawa staff and Canadian Armed Forces personnel will remain at all flood sites.

The City of Ottawa thanks volunteers for their overwhelming support in response to flooding. Nearly 15,000 residents have volunteered since April 19 and have helped fill more than 1.5 million sandbags. As of today, enough sandbags have been filled to meet the projected needs for all communities.

Throughout the coming weekend, a limited number of adults who can lift and manoeuver filled sandbags will be needed to volunteer each day at the Dunrobin Community Centre to help residents with a variety of needs. Close-toed footwear, ideally rubber boots, is needed and volunteers should expect their feet will get wet.

Volunteer reception in Cumberland and Britannia is closed until further notice.

The City will announce through its social media channels when enough volunteers have signed up each day.

City staff, the Canadian Armed Forces and Team Rubicon Canada continue their work throughout the city and are monitoring the situation.

More volunteers will be needed soon. For now, anyone not volunteering over the weekend should take this opportunity to rest and prepare to return in the coming weeks. The City will issue further information about volunteer requirements in the coming days.

The City extends a tremendous thank you to everyone who has assisted with flooding efforts so far.

For residents requiring assistance on private property, the City has partnered with Team Rubicon Canada and Ottawa Volunteer Search and Research (OVSAR).
