Deputy Mayor Laura Dudas and Orléans Ward Councillor Matthew Luloff presented the Mayor’s City Builder Award to Al Tweddle at City Council today, in recognition of over 50 years of volunteering in his community.
Al Tweddle has volunteered in his Orléans community for over 50 years. As one of the first residents of Queenswood Heights, he played a pivotal role in shaping the neighbourhood and he helped create several area parks, including Racine and Kinsella parks. He was instrumental in expanding the number of outdoor rinks in the community and has helped maintain different rinks over the past 50 years. He also established a toboggan hill in the area and was responsible for building the Queenswood Tennis courts.
When not involved in Queenswood Heights, Mr. Tweddle has devoted much of his time to developing the features of Petrie Island. He was a founding member of the Friends of Petrie Island, the organization that developed and maintained the island’s original public beach, established nature trails and protected the island’s habitat. The picnic section of Petrie Island has been officially named the Al Tweddle Picnic Area. Mr. Tweddle was recognized with a United Way Community Builder Award in 2008 for his many volunteering efforts.
The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour created to recognize an individual, group or organization that, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.
Individuals, groups or organizations may be nominated by members of City Council or the public.
The award is presented at the beginning of each City Council meeting.
