The City of Ottawa’s Commemorative Naming Committee is conducting public consultation on the following naming proposals:

  • To name the future park in the Cardel Development near the corner of Shea Road and Kirkham Crescent, the Harold Brown Park
  • To name the future park at 315 Haliburton Heights, the Mark Yakabuski Park

Harold Brown (Ward 21 – Rideau-Goulbourn)

In recognition of his historical significance to the community of Richmond, the City of Ottawa has received a proposal to name the future park at Shea Road and Kirkham Crescent, the Harold Brown Park. Harold Brown played an integral role in the history of the landmark Richmond Bakery, which operated in the community for more than seven decades. In 1930, Harold Brown went into business as a baker, initially operating on McBean Street, in Richmond.

The bakery had no electricity and produced 325 loaves per batch in a brick, wood-fired oven. Bread was delivered to the surrounding countryside using horses loaned by local farmers, across an area 32 kilometres from the bakery, in all directions.

Mr. Brown joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939, and served as a sergeant until his discharge in 1945. He returned to Richmond to open a new bakeshop, which subsequently relocated to Perth Street, where it would remain until it closed in August 2014.

Mark Yakabuski (Ward 6 – Stittsville)

In recognition of his extensive community service and the exceptional impact he had on the community of Stittsville, where he was raised, the City of Ottawa has received a proposal to name the future park at 315 Haliburton Heights, the Mark Yakabuski Park.

Mark Yakabuski played hockey with the Valley Titans, Ottawa 67’s and the Perth Blue Wings in the early 1990s. He became a fixture inside arenas across Ottawa, where he coached and mentored players in the Stittsville minor hockey system.

During his 42nd birthday, he was thrown from a golf cart and suffered a serious spinal injury. Despite the sudden and traumatic event, Mr. Yakabuski remained positive and upbeat, continuing to inspire young hockey players.
