The future is looking bright in the ByWard Market. Check out our upcoming public workshops and two new pilot projects set to help improve public spaces in this iconic Ottawa destination.
Workshops
You’re invited to help plan the future of the ByWard Market’s public spaces at our workshops:
Each of these two identical workshop sessions will include a presentation and table group discussion to gather feedback on the proposed plans for ByWard Market’s streets and public spaces. The plans illustrate suggestions for sidewalks, streets, trees, paving, seating, parking, space for events and special features. Register now!
Pilot projects
In June 2019, two pilot projects are poised to help improve pedestrian spaces in the ByWard Market. They will launch on William Street and Clarence Street.
Both pilots are a chance to try easy, innovative ways to expand spaces for pedestrians in the Market, before making any large-scale investment to renew the street. The City will be evaluating both pilot projects.

Pilot projects
In June 2019, two pilot projects are poised to help improve pedestrian spaces in the ByWard Market. They will launch on William Street and Clarence Street.
- On William Street, the road will be closed to cars to create a wide promenade with more seating and greenery. This will be a new space for people to sit, stay and relax in the core of the Market, with activities for children and space for entertainment. This new hangout officially opens on June 3, and will remain open for several months. This space was created by Ottawa Markets, with support from the City of Ottawa, and is a joint effort inspired by early ideas coming out of the City’s ongoing ByWard Market Public Realm Study.
- On Clarence Street, the City is working with local businesses to provide more accessible pedestrian space between Parent Avenue and Dalhousie Street. We are making more space for people to move, with ramps and temporary promenades in place until November. Business owners will beautify the area with decorative planters to help create a more inviting pedestrian experience. This pilot came about from new accessibility requirements in the City’s Right-of-Way Patio By-law, as well as some of the early ideas from the ByWard Market Public Realm Study.
