Today, Deputy Mayor George Darouze proclaimed May 30, 2019 AccessAbility Day in Ottawa during the City’s 16th annual AccessAbility Day celebrations at City Hall.
This year’s event celebrated service animals and the important role they provide to people with disabilities.
The event featured a panel of service animal experts including the CNIB along with the Ottawa Senators and their dog, Rookie, Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, Lions Foundation Canada and the City’s Paramedic Service, all of whom train or rely on service animals.
The panel discussed the laws governing service animals in Ontario, the impacts and benefits of their service and the responsibilities and satisfaction that come with raising a service puppy. Service animals are regularly used for canine vision, hearing, autism assistance, seizure response, diabetic alert and general support.
The event was held in conjunction with National AccessAbility Week, which runs from May 26 to June 1, 2019.
Quotes
“AccessAbility Day is an opportunity to celebrate the progress we’ve made in building a more accessible city for all our residents. We know that we can do even more, which is why we are updating our Municipal Accessibility Plan and will prioritize accessibility work over the next five years. We encourage residents to get involved and provide their feedback on how we can make Ottawa an even more accessible city.”
Jim Watson, Mayor, City of Ottawa
“It was nice to see the City recognizing the unsung heroes who help people with disabilities. We have members of the Accessibility Advisory Committee who rely on seeing-eye dogs and we appreciate the invaluable services these animals provide, allowing those with disabilities to continue to live independently and safely. We appreciate groups like CNIB, Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and Lions Foundation Canada who help train these animals.”
Don Patterson, Accessibility Advisory Committee
