The City’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee today approved a zoning amendment to create a new land use for cannabis production facilities. The amendment would help harmonize existing permissions in the Zoning By-law with the Cannabis Act.
Cannabis production facilities would be permitted in the same zones where medical marijuana production is already allowed. They would also permitted in other zones appropriate for outdoor cultivation and micro-processing.
To address concerns that permitting cannabis cultivation in greenhouses could lead to the loss of prime agricultural land, cannabis production facilities would have to be outdoors. A minor variance would be required to permit cannabis cultivation in a greenhouse.
The Committee also approved two commemorative naming proposals.
The outdoor pavilion at the Manotick Centennial Park at 5572 Doctor Leach Drive would be named the Ian McDonald Pavilion. Ian McDonald was a dedicated resident and volunteer in Manotick, coaching softball and hockey and serving on the boards of several local associations. He was instrumental in getting the two Centennial Park pavilions built, as well as the park’s baseball facilities.
The two ball diamonds at the Osgoode Community Centre at 5660 Osgoode Main Street would be named the Clarence Mussell Ball Diamonds. Clarence Mussell was a lifetime resident and avid volunteer in Osgoode. He helped facilitate improvements to local facilities and parks and served as President of the Osgoode Community Centre Board and the Junior Farmers’ Association.
Items approved at today’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee meeting will go to City Council on Wednesday, June 12.
