The City’s Green Bin Brigade are hitting the streets this summer to answer your questions about the green bin. If you don’t have a Green Bin, the team will provide you with information on how you can have one delivered right to your front door.
Starting July 2, the City of Ottawa is enhancing the Green Bin Program to allow plastic bags as a bagging option for all organics going into the green bin – such as food scraps, paper towel and tissue, and coffee grinds. Pet waste is now accepted in the green bin –including dog waste and kitty litter.
This change in addition to the existing paper bag bagging option provides a convenient and less messy way to dispose of your household organics.
Using the green bin is one of the easiest things you can do for the environment. Diverting organic waste from the landfill lowers the amount of methane, which contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports the creation of beneficial re-use material and extends the life of our landfill – saving millions of City dollars in developing a landfill site.
So, lookout for our Brigade members and hear about the many easy and convenient disposal options for your green bin. You can then choose the method that best suits you and your family’s comfort level and interest.
Bag-it and Bin-it. Paper or plastic. It’s your choice, and it’s in your best interest.
Look for more green bin information on the City’s website at ottawa.ca/greenbin.
