Adam Smiley got to 280 Elgin St. around 7:45 a.m., with hopes of being one of the first to sample the city’s most sought after cheesecake.
Uncle Tetsu opened its highly anticipated first store in Ottawa on Friday morning.
Smiley is originally from the Greater Toronto Area, where there is a shop in Union Station he’d frequent.
“It’s light, fluffy, it’s a unique flavour for a cheesecake. It’s not something you come across everyday in the city.”
Indeed, diehards like Smiley have been waiting for opening day since the signage on what used to be Boko Bakery changed in March of this year.
“I’ve been harassing them on Instagram to come to Ottawa. So I’m glad that they decided to open up shop.”
Established in Japan in 1990, Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecake opened in 2015 in Toronto and developed a cult following. Fans would line up for hours for its delectable flagship product. The Uncle Tetsu Canada business has grown to open eight locations in the Greater Toronto Area, one in Vancouver and one in Montreal.
