Iraq’s Foreign Ministry filed a complaint via two letters to the president of the United Nations Security Council and UN Secretary General, about the “American attacks and assaults against Iraqi military locations,” according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The complaint was also about the death of Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, deputy head of the Iran-backed Iraqi Popular Mobilization, and others on Iraqi soil.

“These attacks represent a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty and the conditions of the presence of the American forces in Iraq," the statement read, adding, “Iraq called on the Security Council to condemn the bombing and assassinations.”
Iraqi fighters won't let a single US soldier stay in Iraq, according to Hezbollah leader

From CNN's Schams Elwazer

Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, said today that he hoped the Iraqi parliament would draft a law calling for the departure of US troops from Iraq but that – if they don’t – Iraq’s “resistance fighters will not let a single American soldier remain.”

Addressing supporters at a memorial rally south of Beirut for Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Nasrallah said his hope was that Iraqi lawmakers would end the US presence in Iraq.

If parliament cannot do this, Nasrallah said, “what I know about the Iraqis, and the Iraqi resistance factions is that the honorable [Shia] resistence fighters will not let a single American soldier remain in Iraq.”

Pentagon Officials Stunned by Trump’s Order on Soleimani: NYT

Top Pentagon officials were stunned after President Donald Trump chose the harshest option available following Iran-led violence in Iraq and ordered the killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, the New York Times reported.

Trump, who initially rejected the idea of killing Soleimani on Dec. 28, became enraged by TV reports about the U.S. embassy attack in Baghdad and ordered the strike on Thursday, the newspaper said, citing defense and administration officials who weren’t identified.

Trump’s decision was made in spite of disputes in the administration over a new stream of intelligence that warned of threats to U.S. embassies and military personnel in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon, the newspaper said.

Some members of the administration believed the Iranian general was planning an “imminent” attack that could lead to hundreds of deaths, the paper said, citing senior officials it didn’t identify. Another official, however, said that intelligence was “thin” because communications the U.S. obtained between Soleimani and Iran’s supreme leader showed that Ali Khamenei had not yet approved any plans by the general for an attack.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice President Mike Pence were two of the most “hawkish” arguing for a response to Iran, the paper said, citing administration officials who weren’t identified.

(CNN)The Trump administration's use of a drone strike to kill Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani have led to fears the military action could lead to full-scale war between Iran and the United States.

On Saturday, anti-war protesters assembled across the US and around the world to protest the administration's action.
The rallies were organized by the Act Now to Stop War & End Racism (ANSWER) Coalition. On its website, the organization listed scheduled protests in dozens of US cities.
"For all who believe in peace, for all who are opposed to yet another catastrophic war, now is the time to take action," the group said in a statement.

In the nation's capital, the coalition held its "No New War" protest in Lafayette Square across the street from the White House.
Actress and activist Jane Fonda spoke at the gathering, and protesters marched through downtown Washington to the Trump International Hotel, where the rally continued for another hour.
In her speech, Fonda argued that the anti-war movement and the environmental movement had the same goals, and those intersected in Iran.
"The younger people should know that all the wars that have been fought since you have been born have been fought over oil," Fonda said.
Michael Galant, a protester with the Win Without War group, told CNN that hundreds attended the rally, including many Iranian-Americans.
"People are ready to resist another pointless war however we can," he said.

Kenya says its military killed 4 terrorists as al-Shabaab claims attack on US base
By Omar Nor, Radina Gigova and Brad Lendon, CNN

Updated 3:27 PM ET, Sun January 5, 2020

killed in the attack, according to US Africa Command.

US service member and 2 civilian defense contractors killed in Kenya attack

In a statement, Kenya's Defense Forces (KDF) said there had been an attempt to breach security at Manda Airstrip -- which is near the Camp Simba US base -- but it had been "successfully repulsed."
"Four terrorists' bodies have so far been found," the KDF said in the statement. "The airstrip is safe."

Al Qaeda affiliate al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in Lamu county, near Kenya's border with Somalia.
US Africa Command -- which is responsible for military relations with nations on the continent -- said Africa Command and Kenya Defense forces repelled the attack. Africa Command later reported the US deaths.

First on CNN: Joint US-Somali raid nabs suspected US resident

"Working alongside our Kenyan partners, the airfield is cleared and still in the process of being fully secured," Africa Command said Sunday.
Al-Shabaab said the base was used by both American and Kenyan military personnel, and that US military equipment was "destroyed," according to a statement released by the terror group Sunday. Al-Shabaab provided no evidence to support those claims.
"Al-Shabaab has put out multiple press releases exaggerating the security situation on the ground. This practice has proven common place for this terror organization," the Africa Command said.
The airstrip near Camp Simba is also a tourist site frequented by Western visitors to Kenya.

US Air Force airmen from the 475th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron conduct a flag-raising ceremony at Camp Simba, Kenya, on August 26, 2019.
A fire broke out as a result of the breach and affected some fuel tanks at the airstrip, although the blaze was put out, the KDF said.
CNN has reached out to the State Department, the Pentagon, and the US Embassy in Nairobi for comment.
The Somali government, in coordination with US Africa Command, has conducted several retaliatory airstrikes on al-Shabaab targets in recent weeks.
What is Camp Simba?
US troops began operations at Camp Simba in 2017, performing counter-terrorism and border security operations to aid Kenya, according to a US Air Force news release.
It essentially became a permanent US military installation on August 26, 2019, when the American flag was raised over the facility in what the Air Force said signified its "change from tactical to enduring operations."
"The flag flying here today over Camp Simba symbolizes the permanency of our mission and our dedication to our partners," Lt. Col. Cody Smith, commander of the 475th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron, said in August.
CNN's Mike Callahan and Ivana Kottasová contributed to this report.

Iraqi Parliament Votes in Favor of Expelling U.S. Troops

Trump Pushes Iraq, Threatens Sanctions After Vote to Expel U.S. Troops

Iraqi Prime Minister was scheduled to meet Soleimani the morning he was killed

From CNN's Mohammed Tawfeeq and Hira Humayun

Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi said at a parliamentary session on Sunday that he was scheduled to meet with Qasem Soleimani on the morning the top Iranian general was killed.

Mahdi said Soleimani was supposed to carry a message from Iran “in response to the Saudi message that we brought to Iran in order to reach important agreements and situations regarding Iraq and the region.”
Mahdi said he was optimistic after a visit to Saudi Arabia in September 2019 that Baghdad had a plan to open dialogue between Riyadh and Tehran to calm tensions in the region, according to an interview on state-run TV station al-Iraqiya.

Following Mahdi's speech at Parliament Sunday, Shia-majority blocs in the session chanted in support of Soleimani, and against the US and Israel.

UN culture director says US signed agreements barring attacks on cultural sites
From CNN's Richard Roth

The director of the UN's cultural agency discussed tension in the Middle East with the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to a news release on the meeting.

Audrey Azoulay, the director general of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), cited international agreements which bar attacks on cultural sites.

Some context: President Trump has said his administration has identified 52 Iranian sites, including culturally important locations, to target if Iran retaliates.

The Director General cited two legal instruments — both of which were signed by the US and Iran:

  • One that stipulate states will not take deliberate measures that would damage cultural and natural heritage
  • Another that condemns acts of destruction of cultural heritage
Azoulay “stressed the universality of cultural and natural heritage as vectors of peace and dialogue between peoples, which the international community has a duty to protect and preserve for future generations,” the release said

Pentagon chief of staff will resign as Iran tensions mount

From CNN's Ryan Browne and Barbara Starr

The Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense, Eric Chewning, is resigning at the end of January. In a statement, Pentagon press secretary Alyssa Farah said Chewning “will be leaving the department at the end of January to return to the private sector.”

Chewning became the chief of staff to then-acting Secretary of Defense Pat Shanahan in last January.

Here's part of Secretary of Defense Mark Esper's statement:

"I'm grateful for Eric's professionalism, judgment, and leadership over the last seven months as I moved into the Secretary of Defense role ... In an incredibly demanding job, Eric has been a source of calm and tireless work. He will be missed by all. We wish him all the best upon his return to the private sector."
The announcement of the resignation was expected, but it comes as tensions with Iran are mounting.

Defense secretary says US military will not target Iranian cultural sites

From CNN's Ryan Browne and Barbara Starr

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said the US will not target Iranian cultural sites

He went on to say the US "will follow the laws of armed conflict.”

President Trump threatened to target Iranian cultural sites on Sunday.

"They're allowed to kill our people, they're allowed to torture and maim our people, they're allowed to use roadside bombs and blow up our people, and we're not allowed to touch their cultural sites? It doesn't work that way," Trump said, according to a pool report.

Top US general says letter on troop movement "implies withdrawal, that is not what’s happening"

From CNN's Ryan Browne and Barbara Starr

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Mark Milley, called a letter that discussed the movement of troops in Iraq, a “mistake” and that it was poorly worded, incorrectly suggesting that the US was withdrawing troops.

Earlier today, a US official confirmed the authenticity of a letter viewed by CNN from the US Department of Defense to the Iraqi Defense Ministry, which discusses the movement of troops in the region.

Seeking to clarify confusion over a letter leaked today, Milley told reporters:

“That letter is a draft, it was a mistake, it was unsigned, it should not have been released…poorly worded, implies withdrawal, that is not what’s happening.”
Milley said, “It’s an honest mistake…it should not have been sent”

The draft was shared with the Iraqis.
