First Ottawa death attributed to COVID-19
An Ottawa man in his 90s with no travel history is believed to be the first person in the city to die of COVID-19.
Ottawa Public Health said Wednesday night it has been notified of a death related to COVID-19. The individual, a man in his 90s, was living at home with no travel history.
The man developed a fever on March 15. He was seen in the emergency department of The Ottawa Hospital and admitted on March 20 and died on March 25, 2020.
No other details were released. As is the case with people diagnosed with COVID-19, Ottawa Public Health said it will not be discussing any further details in order to protect personal health information.
On Wednesday, Ontario’s health ministry said there have been 13 COVID-19 deaths in province. The number did not include the man’s death.
As of 9:30 am today, Ottawa Public Health was investigating 43 confirmed or indeterminate COVID-19 cases in Ottawa, and is actively following up with these individuals and their close contacts, said the agency.
With more cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Ottawa, including confirmation of community spread, Ottawa Public Health is urging that everyone either practice physical distancing or self-isolate.
Those with symptoms such as fever and cough must self-isolate for 14 days, or 24 hours after symptoms have fully resolved, whichever is longer. Do not leave your home if you have respiratory symptoms.
“Today is a very sad day for us and especially the family and loved ones of the man who passed away. We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the individual who died today,” said Ottawa medical officer of health, Dr, Vera Etches, in a statement.
“I’m asking everyone again to make every effort and take every opportunity to practice physical (social distancing). Please stay home, stay safe and take care of each other.”
