Paul Koch was just getting set for his morning routine Friday, with crosswords and Sudoku in the morning newspaper, when he noticed a rather unexpected guest had dropped by for a dip in the pool.
A moose was half-submerged in his Uplands-area backyard pool and stayed there for several hours through the morning.
Koch said he couldn’t tell if the animal was in distress over the situation or whether the creature was simply enjoying a cool dunk during Ottawa’s humid heat wave.
He phoned police and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
The moose managed to get free without intervention from MNR officers.
“She got out about 10:30, just hopped the fence,” said Koch, who figured that’s how the moose made it into his yard in the first place.
“Fortunately, she just climbed out by herself, raced across the yard and jumped a fence — it’s about five-and-a-half feet — into the neighbour’s yard. Fortunately, she missed their swimming pool and just kept going.”
Koch said Ottawa police who attended the scene told him the moose sprinted across Hunt Club Road near the busy intersection of Uplands Drive and disappeared into a thick wooded area.
“It certainly made my morning,” Koch said.
