There are at least 500 million reasons why you should care about Ottawa’s Solid Waste Master Plan. Here are seven of them.
1. Our landfill is almost land-FULL
The City’s landfill is expected to be full by 2041. It will cost upwards of $500M for a new landfill or other waste processing technology. This alone raises a lot of questions that a Solid Waste Master Plan could answer.
2. Like it or not, the rules are changing
Rules for managing solid waste are changing in Ontario, Canada and around the world. An Ottawa-based plan is necessary to make sure we keep pace with:
3. It’s such a big deal
Under our current waste management system, the City manages the collection, transportation, processing and disposal of blue and black bin recyclables, green bin organics, leaf and yard waste, garbage and bulky items from 291,000 single-family homes and 1,700 multi-residential properties. And Ottawa grows a little larger each year.
4. It's about the money
Just a few numbers for you:
5. It’s actually kinda cool?
New and emerging technologies in waste management are being used in other parts of the world. Why not here? Seemingly futuristic concepts such as autonomous vehicles, opti-bag systems and radio-frequency identification chips are all part of the discussion.
6. It’s about the environment
Waste diversion has a significant role to play in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s locally, nationally and globally.
7. It’s pretty simple
Sure, we’ve given you enough information to write a master’s thesis. But all you need to do is take 15 minutes to fill out a survey. Join the conversation and find out about the next steps on ottawa.ca/wasteplan.
