The forecast looks brighter as the City of Ottawa implements the required public health and safety measures to reopen sports fields, ball diamonds and all City splash pads.
Stage 2 of the Provincial government’s reopening framework now permits the reopening of water recreational facilities, sports fields and ball diamonds where physical distancing measures are in place.
Sports fields and ball diamonds are set to reopen as of June 13 and, along with outdoor public courts, will be available to book for groups of 10 or less. Bookings are for training and practice only at this time and will be conditional on groups following established health and safety protocols, including guidelines established by their sport’s governing body, physical distancing guidelines, and providing proof of valid liability insurance. Competitive play and any activity that is likely to result in individuals coming within two metres of each other is not allowed. Full details regarding booking conditions can be found on ottawa.ca.
Splash pads across the city will begin to reopen over the next week. In order to safely use splash pads, it’s recommended that users maintain physical distancing, use hand sanitizer frequently and use an elbow to activate the splash pads instead of hands, when possible. Browse the interactive map of splash pads to find one near you. Some splash pads will remain closed due to maintenance requirement - these closures will be listed on ottawa.ca.
The Terry Fox Athletic Facility will also reopen as of June 18 with limited access to track and field facilities. Access will be granted only to recognized organizations and athletes at the national and provincial level.
Beaches
The City plans to begin water quality testing and to have lifeguards on duty at municipal beaches daily from noon to 7 pm starting June 27 until August 30, 2020. Please check ottawa.ca/beaches for current information and Ottawa Public Health’s website for water quality testing results.
Wading, outdoor and indoor pools
The City is also working to reopen indoor and outdoor pools and wading pools. More information will be made available when plans are finalized.
As a reminder, play structures and fitness equipment in parks remain closed under provincial orders.
These steps are part of Ottawa's Reopening Plan, which is based on guidance from Ottawa Public Health and aligns with the Province of Ontario’s plan to gradually relax its emergency orders. Information is subject to change based on further developments related to COVID-19 and direction from the Province and Ottawa Public Health.
Residents are reminded to continue to follow the health precautions recommended by Ottawa Public Health, including practicing physical distancing, limiting gatherings to 10 people or less, washing hands with soap and water, or using hand sanitizer frequently, and staying home if you are sick.
