Almost two-thirds of those who are in the Ottawa workforce and have been infected with COVID-19 are health-care workers, according to a special report.

The report, released Wednesday by Ottawa Public Health, looks at occupational information provided by those who have tested positive with the aim of learning more about who is at most risk and how the virus is spreading.

In total, 895 people who tested positive provided occupational information — and 553 of these were health-care workers.

“Although personal protective equipment helps prevent infection, regular encounters with COVID-19 infected patients, difficulties physically distancing in the workplace, and limited ability to work from home increase risk,” said the report.

However, the report noted that health-care workers are also more likely to be tested because of job requirements and surveillance testing in long-term care homes.

Among the findings:

• 62 per cent of confirmed cases with a known occupation were health care workers, including personal support workers, nurses and doctors.

• About seven per cent of all health-care providers providing clinical care in Ottawa have been infected when the numbers are compared with 2016 census occupational figures, said the report — 553 health care workers out of 7,965 of all health-care workers providing clinical care.

• Of the 553 health care workers who were infected, 392 were involved in health-care institutional outbreaks, including 325 working in long-term care homes.

• Ottawa health-care workers had 21 times the risk of lab-confirmed COVID-19 compared with those with other known occupations.

• 119 people working in sales and service occupations tested positive — 13 per cent of total workers.

• 97 people working in education, law and social, community and government services tested positive — 11 per cent of total workers.

• 829 people who were infected were not included in the workforce data because they were retired, unemployed or students. There was also no occupational information on 257 people between the ages of 15 and 69 who tested positive.

• Of the 769 retired persons who tested positive, 648 were involved in institutional outbreaks, including 577 living in long-term care homes.
