Three emergency cooling centres will open on Tuesday, July 7 to offer residents relief from the heat. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for Ottawa that will likely last into the weekend.
Emergency cooling centres at the following facilities will be open on Tuesday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 8 from 11 am until 7 pm. The City will extend operation of these centres as required.
The centres will be set up to ensure users can practice proper physical distancing and will offer access to washrooms and drinking water. Residents should bring a cloth mask if they have one.
Heat warnings issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada require everyone to take extra precautions. While City beaches, pools and splashpads are open, some of the usual ways we cool off might not be available this summer because of measures put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Think ahead and plan for ways to stay cool.
Keep in touch with others who might not be able to stay cool, especially during a heat warning. Heat illnesses are preventable and Ottawa Public Health has information on how to Beat the Heat. Stay cool at home using Beat the Heat tips, such as taking cool showers and using fans or air conditioning. Many apartment buildings have air-conditioned lounges that are open for tenants to cool off.
