Environment and Climate Change Canada has extended its heat warning for Ottawa. The City’s emergency cooling centres will remain open through Friday to offer relief from the heat.

Emergency cooling centres at the following facilities will be open until Friday, July 10, daily from 11 am to 7 pm.

  • Bernard-Grandmaître Arena, 309 McArthur Road
  • Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre, 102 Greenview Avenue
  • Heron Road Community Centre, 1480 Heron Road
  • Jules Morin Park Fieldhouse, 400 Clarence Street East

In addition, the McNabb Arena at 180 Percy Street has been opened as an emergency cooling centre and will operate daily from 9:30 am to 4 pm.

The City will extend operation of these centres as required.

The centres are set up to ensure residents can practice physical distancing. They offer access to washrooms and drinking water. Residents should wear a cloth mask if they have one.

Heat warnings issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada require everyone to take extra precautions. While City beaches, pools and splashpads are open, some of the usual ways to cool off might not be available this summer because of measures put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Think ahead and plan for ways to stay cool.

Heat illnesses are preventable and Ottawa Public Health has information on how to beat the heat. Stay cool at home by taking cool showers and using fans or air conditioning. Many apartment buildings have air-conditioned lounges where tenants can cool off.

Keep in touch with others who might not be able to stay cool.
