Six emergency cooling centres are now open through Friday, July 10 as the heat wave continues. City Hall will be open from 9:30 am to 4 pm, with access from the Lisgar Street entrance, to offer relief from the heat. Those with appointments for in-person services with Service Ontario and the City of Ottawa Client Service Centre are asked to use the Laurier Street entrance.
The heat warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada may extend into the weekend and the City will extend operation of the emergency cooling centres as warranted. The following facilities will be open daily from 11 am to 7 pm.
In addition, City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West (Lisgar Street entrance), and the McNabb Arena at 180 Percy Street will operate daily from 9:30 am to 4 pm.
The centres are set up to ensure residents can practice physical distancing. They offer access to washrooms and drinking water. Residents should wear a cloth mask and one can be provided if they do not have a mask.
Heat warnings issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada require everyone to take extra precautions. While City beaches, pools and splashpads are open, some of the usual ways to cool off might not be available this summer because of measures put in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Think ahead and plan for ways to stay cool.
Heat illnesses are preventable and Ottawa Public Health has information on how to beat the heat. Stay cool at home by taking cool showers and using fans or air conditioning. Many apartment buildings have air-conditioned lounges where tenants can cool off.
Keep in touch with others who might not be able to stay cool.
