US coronavirus deaths could top 6,000 a day by December in worst-case scenario, expert predicts

The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in the United States could spike to as high as 6,000 people a day by December in the worst-case scenario, according to Dr. Chris Murray, the chair of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington.

Currently, about 1,000 people are dying daily from the coronavirus in the US.

In a new model released Friday, researchers at IHME predicted the number of daily deaths will decrease slowly in September -- then rise to nearly 2,000 a day by the start of December.

But Murray told CNN that, “depending on what our leaders do,” things can get worse.
“We have a worse scenario in what we release and that’s many, many more deaths,” he said. “And in fact, by the time December rolls around, if we don't do anything at all, the daily death toll in the US would be much higher than the 2,000 deaths a day by December. It could be as high as 6,000 deaths a day.”
The new IHME forecast projects 310,000 deaths by December -- 15,000 more than the previous forecast two weeks ago. That’s because while coronavirus infections are dropping in some areas, the death rate is not.

“In some states -- California is a good example -- cases peaked, are coming down, but deaths haven't,” Murray said. “We're seeing upswings in transmission in places like Kentucky and Minnesota, Indiana.”

If mask use increased in the US to 95%, the number of deaths could drop by almost 70,000, Murray added.

不对。5月份有过7,000上下的时候。
不会吧?我只关注过这个网站,数据不会相差这么大,好几倍。

如果是全世界,差不多。

Coronavirus projection for US forecasts 317,697 deaths by December

The virus is on track to be the leading cause of death in the U.S. by December, a research institute says

By Paul Best | Fox News

A revised coronavirus death forecast for the United States, released Thursday, projects the nation will see a total of 317,697 virus-linked deaths by Dec. 1.

That’s an increase of about 8,000 deaths from last week's earlier forecast issued by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington.

As of Thursday, the U.S. had recorded 5,863,363 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 180,595 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. The rate of new cases has declined in recent weeks, but the death rate has remained steady at around 1,000 a day since early August.

COVID-19 is currently the second leading cause of death in the U.S., after ischemic heart disease. The IHME predicts the virus will be the nation's leading cause of death by December, when 2,000 deaths a day are expected.

About half of the U.S. population currently wears a mask in public. If a nationwide mask mandate were to be implemented and 95% of people complied, the IMHE predicted, there would be 249,833 deaths by December -- a reduction of 67,864 deaths from the current forecast.
According to Axios, 34 states and Washington, D.C., currently have some form of a mask mandate.

President Trump recently encouraged Americans to wear masks, but he still rejects calls for a national mask mandate.

Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has called for mandatory masks nationwide.

"Every single American should be wearing a mask when they're outside for the next three months, at a minimum. Every governor should mandate mandatory mask-wearing," Biden told reporters earlier this month. "Let's institute a mask mandate nationwide starting immediately, and we will save lives."

搞不清这逻辑了,预测不断上涨,几天之内总统是又能多救8千条命,还是可以心安理得地多害8千?

8月21日的预测是到12月1日,死亡310000,刚刚一周就上调至317697.
