A new by-law that strengthens the rules protecting trees in Ottawa’s urban area will come into effect on January 1, 2021.
Urban trees are a precious resource - they clean our air, keep things cool, and are good for our mental and physical health. They need protection as our city grows, to help ensure that over one million Ottawa residents can enjoy the benefits of urban greenery in the decades to come.
The new Tree Protection By-law provides better protections that are easier to implement and enforce. It brings together Ottawa’s two existing tree by-laws into one streamlined and updated set of rules.
The changes improve the protections for trees in the urban area through updated processes and procedures, city-wide tree compensation guidelines and earlier consideration of trees during planning and development. The by-law also decreases the diameter limit for distinctive trees from 50 cm to 30 cm for the inner urban area, and has a sharper focus on tree protection, especially on development sites.
This new by-law was a key recommendation of the Urban Forest Management Plan, Ottawa’s 20-year strategic plan to make Ottawa’s urban forest healthier, more diverse and resilient. Maintaining and growing Ottawa’s tree canopy is key to building climate resiliency and adapting to future climate conditions.
