What do skateboards, cell phones, and wheel chairs have in common? The simple answer--the industrial designer. Industrial designers are the creative experts behind the thousands of products that make our lives more efficient and comfortable every day.
The development of any new product, from sporting products to telephones and medical equipment, requires a team of experts. The industrial designer is one of these experts.
Using the special methods and techniques of modern design, industrial designers work to either improve existing products or to create totally new ones. They design not only the features and appearance of a product, but also the structure and functional relationships that make the product work. Industrial designers help develop an overall plan of what product is required, for what market, in what quantities, by what manufacturing methods, from what materials, and at what costs, so that the final product will satisfy the user.

If you are frosh or going to be a frosh, not taking arts, this is good

需要什么样的portfolio？

put your best (don't put the work you don't like, in fact many people do) works to show your skills in the areas of sketching, tech. drawings, renderings, possible product designs (could be a school project or design contest), computer 2D/3D works, a bit of photography and visual art works if you are strong at it, never put too many pieces of a same kind of works, not many people have done works in all these areas, so don't worry if you don't have them all. if there are any kind of fine (design not art) sketches showing your thinking, that can be really helpful, because the portfolio is going to be used in your interview with ID prof., you are going to be asked questions about your works. that's about it, hope it helps.
