City once again recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers

For the ninth time, the City has been chosen as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers in a competition that recognizes organizations for their exceptional workplace diversity and inclusion programs.

The winners were selected by editors at Mediacorp Canada.

We have been recognized for our continued commitment to creating an inclusive work environment and ensuring our workforce reflects the diversity of the community we serve. In the past several years we have been working on a Corporate Diversity and Inclusion plan.

Sawsan Al-Refaei, the City’s Women and Gender Equity Specialist has been leading our Strategy

This has included the launch of our Women and Gender Equity Strategy, new affinity groups and Indigenous learning opportunities. Specifically, the selection committee recognized the City for:

• Creating the new Gender and Race Equity, Inclusion, Indigenous Relations and Social Development Service, establishing an Anti-racism Secretariat and hiring the City’s first Anti-Racism Specialist, to adopt an anti-racism approach to policy development, decision making and program development, as well as to work with community partners to help ensure equity of opportunity and outcome for all people.
• establishing a goal to increase overall representation of employment equity designated groups. In the past year, the city rolled out a variety of tools and practices to help remove barriers to employment and to recognize bias in the interview process.
