Francophone presence to be enhanced at seven recreation centres

March 20 is the Journée internationale de la Francophonie. It’s a big day to celebrate Francophone culture and that’s something the City of Ottawa does year-round. Seven recreation and culture facilities will be designated as Francophone hubs that will help to anchor French programming – ranging from sports and fitness to arts and special interest programs.

A new campaign entitled “FrancoFun” will showcase the recreation, culture, and other City services available to Francophone residents. The launch of the FrancoFun initiative highlights Ottawa’s vibrant French culture in public spaces where people gather to play, learn and interact with their community.

With generous support from the Department of Canadian Heritage, each hub location will have an area called Mon Coin FrancoFun that is furnished with a special display kiosk and the Franco-Ontarian flag to prominently reflect the identity of Francophone residents.

The seven Francophone hub locations will be:

• Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex – Orléans
• CARDELREC Recreation Complex – Goulbourn
• François Dupuis Recreation Centre
• Minto Recreation Complex - Barrhaven
• Richcraft Recreation Complex – Kanata
• Sandy Hill Community Centre
• St-Laurent Complex

A quarter of the Franco-Ontarian population call Ottawa home. These resource centres highlight the wide variety of French arts and recreation programming. They also reflect and celebrate Ottawa’s strong, vibrant Francophone culture, which has built our city’s history and continues to shape our present and future.

The City’s recreation and culture 2021 Spring eGuides are also online at ottawa.ca/recreation and ottawa.ca/loisirs, with aquatic registration beginning Monday, March 22 at 9 pm and registration for all other programming on Tuesday, March 23 at 9 pm.

All of the Francophone hub facilities are currently open and offering limited programming due to COVID-19 restrictions. The hubs will be permanent fixtures and full programming will return when COVID-19 restrictions are eased.
