An Ottawa police officer shot a machete-carrying man on Montreal Road early Sunday, prompting a review by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

Witnesses said a man holding a machete approached the Petro-Canada station on the corner of Ogilvie Road just after 3 a.m. Though it is a 24-hour operation, the doors are locked after 11 p.m. and he was unable to enter the convenience store attached to the gas service.

Carolyn Cooper lives right beside the station on Montreal Road. She said she heard what sounded like “three pops” at about 3:30 a.m. and looked out an upstairs window.

She could see four or five people kneeling over a man lying in the parking lot of the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen. As late as noon Sunday, a dark-handled machete or sword could be seen lying in the restaurant’s parking lot, behind a large area cordoned off with yellow police tape.

The SIU, a civilian oversight agency, announced its investigation on Twitter at 9 a.m. Sunday. A section of Montreal Road, from Ogilvie to Bethamy Lane, remained closed Sunday morning.

Area Coun. Tim Tierney provided an update on his Facebook page. He said police encountered an individual with a weapon at the corner “and it escalated.” He said the individual was shot in the leg and his injuries are not life-threatening.

The SIU investigates cases involving police conduct where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Ottawa police have declined further comment because the SIU has invoked its mandate.
