This past year, moms have been nothing short of heroes. COVID-19 has put school on the dining room table and thrown a wrench in the support systems and activities that typically keep families running.

Last year Mother’s Day was in the early days, when homemade sourdough recipes were still breaking the internet. Today, hope is here in the form of vaccines. We’re making amazing progress, but we can’t let our guard down, especially with variants circulating.

We will get there. But this Sunday, public health guidance remains the same.

Until more of the community is vaccinated, everyone should continue to practice public health measures:

  • Celebrate with those you live with only
  • Practice physical distancing from others when in public
  • Wear a mask
  • Wash your hands
  • Stay home if you’re sick.

For more info, check out Ottawa Public Health’s guidance.

Tips for a safe and fun Mother’s Day

If mom lives nearby…

  • Create a care package of small gifts and snacks from local merchants and deliver it to her door.

Does she live far away?

  • Ordering flowers is always a great choice, COVID or no COVID.

Or …

  • Why not order a special meal or dessert to be delivered?
  • Send a video message! It could be recording of you and/or the grandkids singing a special song, reciting a silly poem, or simply sharing a few words from the heart.

However you choose to mark the occasion, keep in mind that with each passing day, with each vaccine administered in Ottawa, we are getting closer to Community Immunity. Until then: stay safe and show the moms in your life some love!

Stay in the know

To make finding vaccine information a little easier, the City of Ottawa has created the COVID-19 Vaccine Update e-subscription. Sign up to receive the latest updates on vaccine distribution in the city, delivered to your inbox. You’ll also get a roundup of COVID-19 and vaccine-related information every Friday.

All residents, even those who are not yet eligible for the vaccine, are encouraged to register for the e-subscription. It will keep you informed on:

  • who is currently eligible for the vaccine
  • locations of clinics
  • how and when you can schedule an appointment
  • other vaccine updates

To sign up for the e-subscription, make sure you choose the first item: COVID-19 Vaccine Update.
