Position Title: Project Assistant (Chinese Speaking), Yet Keen Seniors’ Day Centre
Hourly Rate: $14.25 (as per Canada Summer Jobs funding guideline)
Department: Family, Community Health and Harm Reduction
Reporting to: Program Coordinator, Yet Keen Seniors’ Day Centre
Type: Part Time, Contract (28 hours per week, Tuesday to Friday, from June 22 – August 27, 2021)
Benefits: 4% in lieu of vacation
Start Date: June 22nd, 2021
Deadline: June 4th, 2021 at 5:00 PM EST

Job Summary
Reporting to the Program Coordinator of Yet Keen Seniors’ Day Centre, the Project Assistant will assist in coordinating and facilitating an intergenerational exchange digital project that would run through the course of Summer 2021.

The goal of the project is to increase social connection and confidence for seniors who have been in extended isolation due to COVID-19, facilitate understanding between older adults and younger generations in the Chinese Canadian community, as well as to promote knowledge sharing from community elders. With coaching and guidance from the team, the Project Assistant will play a significant role in preparing and delivering weekly interactive group sessions, documenting and archiving content generated, promoting the project to community members and partners, as well as bridging communities to achieve positive results for the project.

We are open to considering applications from youth (aged 15-30 inclusive) with less experience but the right language skills, and lots of motivation and passion for working with seniors! As part of the federal Canada Summer Jobs program, there is a mentorship component that would allow youth to learn as they go. Job Specific Responsibilities
  • Assists in preparing and facilitating weekly online exchange sessions with Chinese-speaking seniors on Zoom
  • Supports promotion of the project (creating promotional materials such as posters, social media graphics, editing videos etc.)
  • Maintains digital presence of the project (e.g. posting on social media and other digital platforms, engaging audience using IG stories)
  • Updates program blog with new content on a regular basis
  • Reaches out to community groups and partners for support
  • Offers technical support and guidance for seniors to participate in the activities using Zoom on a variety of devices
  • Conducts sign up of activities; tracks attendance
  • Liaisons with SWCHC staff and other partners if needed
  • Ensures the safety and confidentiality of virtual programming
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated passion working with seniors
  • Ability to facilitate in group settings and coordinate with multiple partners
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design, video editing, blog development and maintenance and using Zoom
  • Effective at communicating and problem solving
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, reliable, punctual, detail-oriented
  • Criminal Reference check for working with vulnerable populations
  • Understanding and analysis of the importance of equity and anti-oppressive practices in seniors service
  • Experience working with marginalized populations facing multiple barriers is a bonus
Language Capability
  • English, written and spoken, essential
  • Ability to speak either Cantonese or Mandarin is required
    (Cantonese is prioritized due to demographic of the membership)
  • Written Chinese is a strong asset
***We welcome candidates from outside of Ottawa to apply if they have the ability to work remotely at regular office hours according to Ottawa local time. Candidates do not have to be a current student as long as they are aged 30 or under.

Due to Canada Summer Jobs funding the candidate must:
(a) is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
(b) is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
(c) is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
