The City’s Planning Committee today approved zoning amendments that would lead to residential growth near future transit infrastructure in Stittsville, in line with Official Plan targets for more new dwellings in existing, built-up areas.
In Stittsville’s Fernbank community, the Committee approved three rental apartment buildings along Robert Grant Avenue beside a future bus transit station. The project would add 504 one and two-bedroom units to the community in three buildings of six, nine and 18 storeys.
The two shorter buildings would be built first and the high rise would proceed when the City extends Robert Grant Avenue between Abbott Street and Maple Grove Road, completing an important link in Ottawa’s transportation network. The two taller buildings would be located close to the future transit station while the six-storey building would be nearer existing townhouses on Livery Street. The building’s height would drop to four storeys closest to the existing community.
Due to increased development pressures around Bank Street south of Leitrim Road, the City will begin designing a widened Bank Street between Leitrim Road and Dun Skipper Drive, and construction is anticipated to start in late 2022 or early 2023. The Committee approved the advancement of preliminary design work on this important city-building initiative.
Recommendations from today’s Planning Committee meeting will rise to Council on Wednesday, May 26.
