Think about your average day. Did you stumble out of bed to shower and make a pot of coffee, and then rush to get your waste and recycling to the curb? Maybe you drove, walked or cycled to school, work or an appointment? Afterward, did you take a walk through a park, urban forest or public space to unwind? If so, take a moment to celebrate the many people in our City who are working behind the scenes to keep Ottawa clean, green and safe.

This week is National Public Works Week across North America. It’s an opportunity to recognize the essential workers who have been on the front lines throughout the pandemic.

  • These are the professionals who ensure that toilets flush, water flows and our drinking water remains safe.
  • These are the waste collection operators who have done double-duty to remove our waste and recycling this year while we’ve been decluttering our homes and ordering online more frequently.
  • This is the group of people who are out at all hours and in all weather to keep our roads, sidewalks and cycling routes clear and passable.
  • They’re the people who take care of the public green spaces that have been a place of calm for many, and who keep us calm during the spring melt.
  • They also ensure that safe and secure bike and vehicle parking is accessible when we’re volunteering and supporting local.

Throughout the pandemic, our City staff have continued to deliver the critical services residents and business owners rely on with professionalism, dedication and pride. This week, and everyday, let’s celebrate the many partners keeping our communities safe and moving.
