The City’s Transportation Committee today received a report outlining the City’s parking management activities in 2020.
The City manages 6,576 paid parking spaces, 17 parking lots and 2,337 bike parking spaces in Ottawa. Last year’s operating expenses for parking were $13.3 million, a 7.8 per cent decrease from 2019, when there were higher winter maintenance costs. Parking generated $8.9 million in revenue, a significant decrease of $8.2 million due to less demand for parking during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City has allocated $7.9 million from the Province’s Safe Restart Agreement funding to address the revenue gap.
Parking Services spent $1.1 million on sustainable transportation, which includes maintenance of park-and-ride facilities, bike parking, transportation demand management initiatives and sustainable urban planning programs. Other highlights for 2020 include a new Public Bike Parking Strategy, a plan for new technologies, and better processes to track and manage bike parking requirements.
The Bruce Timmermans Awards recognize outstanding contributions to cycling in the city. The Committee presented the individual award to Jeff Tindall, who promotes tips on bike maintenance and leads Let’s Bike Stittsville, which advocates for cycling rights and safety. The Committee presented the organizational award to the Ottawa Mountain Bike Association for their work in creating the Carlington Bike Park.
Recommendations from today’s meeting requiring Council approval will rise to Council on Wednesday, June 9.
