Beginning Monday, June 21, Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) service changes in downtown Ottawa will improve transit service between Ottawa and Gatineau by making it easier for customers to connect between O-Train Line 1 and STO buses.
All STO routes to Ottawa that use the Portage Bridge will connect to O-Train Line 1 at Lyon Station, serving bus stops on Lyon Street at Queen Street, on Kent Street at Sparks Street, or on Wellington Street at Lyon Street. Some STO routes will serve Parliament Station at bus stops on Bank Street north of Queen Street, providing a connection to O-Train Line 1 and OC Transpo Routes 6, 7, 11, 12 and 19.
Some STO routes will travel via the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and serve stops on King Edward Avenue, Rideau Street at King Edward Avenue, and Mackenzie King Station, maintaining connections to destinations nearby. STO routes serving Tunney’s Pasture Station are unaffected.
STO buses will no longer use the stops on Wellington Street between Kent and Elgin streets, nor the stop on Mackenzie Avenue near Major’s Hill Park. Some OC Transpo bus routes will continue operating to Gatineau to provide connections to major workplaces. Customers will have more travel options and can transfer easily to STO routes for more frequent and direct service to major destinations in Gatineau. The changes will also improve reliability by removing bus service from parts of Wellington Street that are often congested.
The changes follow a 2017 agreement between the City of Ottawa, the Ville de Gatineau, OC Transpo and the STO regarding downtown bus operations. This marks the completion of significant changes to reduce bus volumes in downtown Ottawa, improve connections for customers, and improve reliability of service in conjunction with the opening of O-Train Line 1. With these changes, peak bus volumes east of Bank Street in downtown Ottawa will be reduced by about 75 per cent from 2018 levels.
Since 1973, OC Transpo and STO have worked closely to ensure seamless travel between the Ottawa-Gatineau urban area, including integrated fare payment systems and easy transfers. All OC Transpo and STO monthly passes and transfers are accepted on both systems, making it easy to pay your fare and transfer between systems to complete your trip. As STO commemorates its 50th anniversary, OC Transpo looks forward to continued collaboration and improvements for transit customers.
