美国人William Edgar Geil (1865 - 1925)
英国人William Lindesay (1956 - )

Geil<The Great Wall of China>每一章有一句中文谚语,及其译文。 Great Wall, all hail!

Geil 盖尔1907-08年曾经独自走过长城,于1909年出版了《中国长城》(The Great Wall of China)一书,由纽约的Sturgis and Walton出版社出版。

Lindesay finds a location in April 2008 depicting what was a fine tower in Geil’s time. The tower now lacks the engraved tablet—probably naming the tower—that was placed above the doorway, while the upper-story battlements have fallen. (Piao Tiejun)

Great Wall in Hebei Province in 1908. He described the towers as jewels. (William Edgar Geil)

When Lindesay eventually found the location in 2006 the towers had all gone. Locals explained they were destroyed during the Sino-Japanese War in 1938. (William Lindesay)

William Edgar Geil on the Great Wall at Luowenyu, June 7, 1908. William Lindesay had thumbed through Geil’s book The Great Wall of China, and was stunned by the photographs, particularly one showing Geil near a tower on a remote section of the wall. Lindesay had a photo of himself in that very spot but noticed that in his the tower was missing. (William Edgar Geil)

William Lindesay on the Wall at Luowenyu, mid-November 1987. This “coincidental rephotography,” evidencing the disappearance of the watchtower that stood behind Geil in 1908, and which had disappeared by 1987, led Lindesay to systematically document changes on the entire length of China’s Great Wall. (William Lindesay)
