Join the City on Thursday, December 2 from 10 to 11:30 am as we celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held virtually via Zoom.
The United Nations’ theme for International Day of Persons with Disabilities this year is, “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”
This day aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of the barriers persons with disabilities face in political, social, economic and cultural environments.
The day is celebrated by people, municipalities, organizations, agencies and others who help to identify and eliminate the discrimination, marginalization, exclusion and barriers that people with disabilities face.
At the virtual event, Deputy Mayor Laura Dudas will provide remarks and proclaim Friday, December 3 International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Ottawa. Jeff Willbond, Director General of the Canadian Human Rights Commission, will then provide an update on the Accessible Canada Act and Jeff Poirier, Acting Director of the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Policy, Education, Monitoring and Outreach branch, will speak to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with disabilities and human rights in Ontario.
To promote the inclusion of all participants, the following supports are in place for the event:
Register for the event online by noon on Wednesday, December 1.
When registering, please let us know if you require any additional disability-related accommodations to participate.
The City has recently updated its Municipal Accessibility Plan and remains committed to breaking down barriers and making Ottawa an accessible city for all.
We acknowledge there is still much work to do, and on this day, we reaffirm our commitment to making City services more inclusive and accessible to residents and visitors with visible and non-visible disabilities.

- Langue des signes québécoise (LSQ)
- Continuous real-time captioning in English and French
- Simultaneous French translation
