During what continues to be a challenging time for Ottawa’s most vulnerable, and with the holiday season well underway, City of Ottawa staff and community members came together to make the 37th annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive a success. A total of 103,415 pounds of food and $15,000 was collected for the Ottawa Food Bank. These donations will help keep the shelves stocked for the upcoming holiday season.
The food drive was held on Saturday, December 4, with OC Transpo buses parked onsite at participating Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Your Independent Grocer and No Frills locations in Ottawa. This year’s food drive again incorporated extra health and safety precautions to ensure everyone was as safe as possible.
All the food items collected were delivered directly to the Ottawa Food Bank, FAMSAC Food Cupboard, Stittsville Food Bank, and the Kanata Food Cupboard.
City employees also contributed to the total amount collected by generously donating through an internal virtual campaign, which ran from November 1 to December 3.
Every day, the Ottawa Food Bank’s Michael Street warehouse distributes 12 to 14 tons of food. This helps provides their network of 112 member agencies with the food and supplies needed to help tens of thousands of people each month.
The OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive is a joint effort between OC Transpo, the City of Ottawa, local Loblaw banner stores, and the Ottawa Food Bank.
Quotes
‘’This continues to be a challenging time for so many of Ottawa’s residents. Struggling to put food on the table shouldn’t be on anyone’s mind entering the holiday season. I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to the many volunteers who participated in the event and in turn supported the less fortunate members of their community. OC Transpo and City of Ottawa employees have once again stepped up to lend valuable support to the 37th annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive. I would also like to commend our partners at Loblaw Companies Limited and the Ottawa Food Bank, and the kind donors whose contributions make this food drive an outstanding event every year.’’
Mayor Jim Watson, City of Ottawa
‘’OC Transpo employees take pride in providing an essential service to our residents. Organizing and running the food drive represents an additional way that they can be of service in their own communities, and that’s why we see such great support from OC Transpo staff and their family members every year. They always come out to make this annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive successful. Since the Ottawa Food Bank came into existence in 1984, staff at OC Transpo have upheld this tradition, and it is thanks to their efforts that this the longest running and most successful food drive in Ottawa.’’
Councillor Allan Hubley, Chair, Transit Commission
‘’The Loblaw family of stores looks forward to the OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive every year. 2021 has been another challenging year that has brought great uncertainty to many and food insecurity continues to be at a high level. It is with great pride that we could once again be part of this food drive and help our community in this time of need. We want to thank our partners at OC Transpo and the Ottawa Food Bank for allowing us to be part of this fantastic community event. We especially would like to thank all the volunteers that worked so hard to make this event so successful and of course our community, which always responds in the most giving way. We’re already looking forward to next year’s 38th annual OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive.’’
Jeff Brierley, Store Manager, Loblaws, College Square Market
‘’The generosity of the community through the OC Transpo/Loblaw Christmas Food Drive continues to be so incredible. We are grateful for this long-running food drive and all the effort the City of Ottawa, OC Transpo, Loblaw, and volunteers put into it. It shows the community that we are a city that cares.’’
