Explore a new world or culture through the eye (or lens) of a local photo/lens-based artist! The 2022 Karsh Continuum exhibition, which only happens every four years, is coming this week at the Karsh-Masson Gallery inside City Hall.

You can visit the 2022 Karsh Continuum exhibition from Thursday, March 3 to Friday, April 1, 2022. An artists tour will be held in-person on Sunday, March 13 at 2 pm. The tour is free and will be presented in English. For more information, visit ottawa.ca.

First started as a part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations, the 2022 exhibition is the second iteration of this very special show. This year’s show was curated by 2019 Karsh Award laureate Andrew Wright and will feature selected works from emerging local artists Stéphane Alexis, Shelby Lisk and Neeko Paluzzi.

“All three artists engage with photography in an expanded sense,” says Wright, the show’s curator. “Recognizing both the utility and the limitations of photography’s established traditions and conceits, they continue to make poignant works where photography is an important yet constituent part of their significance.”

Every four years, the City’s Cultural Funding Unit gives out the prestigious Karsh Award to a local photo/lens-based artist. The award was first created in 2003, to honour the legacy of Yousuf and Malak Karsh, who have both contributed heavily to Ottawa’s cultural heritage. Award recipients have the opportunity to hold an exhibition of their work at the Karsh-Masson Gallery, and are also invited to act as a mentor within Ottawa’s artistic community and curate the Karsh Continuum.
