The City’s Transportation Committee today received an update on municipal parking management in 2021, showing the City brought in $11.3 million in parking revenues. That marks a 26-per-cent increase over the $8.9 million collected in 2020 but is still below pre-pandemic revenues. In 2021, the City received $5.7 million from the Province to help cover parking revenue losses related to the pandemic and contributed $2.2 million to parking reserves.

The City spent $1 million on sustainable transportation, which covered costs related to public bike parking, park-and-ride facility maintenance and sustainable urban planning programs. The City also created a centralized online intake for new bike parking requests and installed 120 new bike racks, adding a total of 305 new bike parking spaces.

The Pay-By-Phone system saw two upgrades to improve customer service: integrated digital beach parking passes replaced physical passes, and the mobile app now allows users to select their location using a map. The City also finished refurbishing the 660 active Pay & Display machines across Ottawa, improving the machines’ reliability and the overall customer experience.

Parking staff have updated the Capital Program Plan for 2022 to 2027 with planned work and will table it for approval as part of the annual budget process. In addition to regular maintenance and lifecycle work, the plan would deliver more on-street electric vehicle charging locations, secure bike parking and public parking in high-demand locations, such as the ByWard Market and Little Italy.

This report will rise to Council on Wednesday, April 13.
