Mayor Jim Watson, with Councillors Laura Dudas and Catherine McKenney, recognized Norm Robillard and the Ottawa Senior Pride Network’s dedication to the community at today’s City Council meeting by presenting them with the Mayor’s City Builder Award.
For decades, Norm Robillard has been a volunteer coach for basketball, soccer and several minor hockey teams and he volunteered in several capacities as a first responder and paramedic. He also worked on several initiatives to raise awareness and support for the mental well-being of public safety officers.
In 2012, Norm Robillard founded the original Canadian Paramedic Memorial Ride and served as a board member and in various capacities with the organization – now called the Tour Paramedic Ride. He has been a union representative, mentor and vocal advocate for mental health in the profession. Norm has also helped coordinate the Toy Mountain Christmas Campaign at the Ottawa Paramedic Service and facilitated collections for the Ottawa Food Bank.
The Ottawa Senior Pride Network provides a range of health and training resources, as well as opportunities where 2SLGBTQQIA+ seniors can learn, interact and share ideas.
Formed in 2008, the Ottawa Senior Pride Network is a volunteer-run network of 2SLGBTQQIA+ seniors and allies that envisions a world in which 2SLGBTQQIA+ seniors are honoured and included in their communities. The network brings people together and works to ensure community members have access to appropriate services and facilities as they come to need them.
The group includes several 2SLGBTQQIA+ seniors who have a long history of activism and community development work, and the network builds on the strengths and resiliency of 2SLGBTQQIA+ seniors and treats them as active agents in their own well-being.
The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour, created to recognize an individual, group or organization that, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.
Individuals, groups or organizations may be nominated by Members of Council or the public.
