Today, the Transit Commission was updated on the improved outlook of O-Train Line 1, bus and Para Transpo service. The Transit Commission also received a status update on the zero-emission bus program. The Commission was also advised that its 2020 decision to make masks mandatory under the Transit By-law remains in place, and that OC Transpo staff will continue to provide information to customers that masks are required at stations and on buses, trains, and Para Transpo vehicles.

Highlights from the update include:

  • Service availability continues to stabilize across all modes of transit.
  • OC Transpo ridership continues to recover, with month-over-month increases.
  • March 2022 ridership was at 49 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, the greatest recovery to date.
  • Para Transpo ridership continues to increase, with 374,000 booked trips from January to March.
  • Phase 1 of My Para Transpo, a new online booking and real-time tracking tool for Para Transpo customers, launched on April 14.
  • Para Transpo phone response times averaged 3 minutes.
  • Morning and afternoon peak bus availability exceeds service requirements.
  • O-Train Line 1 performance has consistently delivered 99 per cent of scheduled service to date in April.
  • Light Rail Vehicle availability surpassed targets, with Line 1 service availability trending upwards.

The Transit Commission was also updated on the zero-emission bus program. Four electric buses entered service on February 7 and have travelled over 40,000 kms on 70 different routes across the transit system. Staff have observed that they have met their expected range, and it takes four hours to charge a bus, as anticipated. Procurement of 26 more zero-emission buses is scheduled to occur in June and they are expected to be delivered by the end of 2023.
