Get ready to mark your calendars! Events and festivals both big and small are returning to Ottawa.
We’re raising the curtain on all the work the City does to make sure your favourite events, like Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, Bluesfest, Capital Pride parade and so many more, are executed in a fun and safe way.
Before a large outdoor event or festival can welcome visitors, the City works with the organizer to review their plans and coordinate execution. The Event Central unit in the City’s Emergency and Protective Services department is the primary point of contact for organizers and guides them through every step of the review and approval process.
For each event, the unit establishes and coordinates a Special Events Advisory Team, made up of the appropriate City departments and public agencies, to review the event details and planning documents. Depending on the size and scope of an event, this team can include anywhere from five members to upwards of 40.
“For the upcoming Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend, we are coordinating a diverse group of City services and stakeholder partners in the review,” explains Jacqueline Quinn, Senior Advisor, Special Events and Sponsorships, with Event Central. “These stakeholders include Ottawa Police, the City’s Traffic Services and Road Services branches, Ottawa Paramedic Service, the National Capital Commission, public museums and venues along the route, as well as many others.”

Together, the team fleshes out any requirements or permits necessary for a successful event, while coordinating activities and minimizing impacts within the community and Business Improvement Areas. This can include temporary changes to parking restrictions in a nearby neighborhood, putting noise mitigation measures in place, issuing building permits and ensuring structures are safe for use, conducting road closures and ensuring emergency plans and protocols are prepared.
“We are afforded all kinds of logistical, health and safety and planning tools that effectively coordinate key services that need to function during our events,” says Ian Fraser, Race Director of Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. “These are complex puzzle pieces that the City expertly consults on and helps us organize.”
When an event is successfully executed, the positive impacts go beyond a fun weekend with friends and family. They boost the local economy by attracting visitors to hotels, restaurants and local businesses and employ local industry talent, suppliers and food vendors.
Events also connect residents with new neighbourhoods in the city, encourage healthy lifestyles and celebrate diversity. Events like Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend support important causes and their sights and sounds have become part of the fabric of our city.
“We build community, we add to that unique urban feel and we help move nearly a million dollars to local charities every year,” says Ian.

In 2019, the Event Central unit provided support and coordination to more than 300 local events. Many of these events are returning this year, and while some may have different venues or routes, the Event Central unit is up to the task and ready to welcome them back.
“We are fortunate to work with organizers and community leaders who are committed to coordinating safe events that bring so much to our city,” says Jacqueline.

A team effort

"We build community”

“There is something so uplifting about marking a date in your calendar - a goal you want to achieve, that artist you can’t wait to finally see live, the chance to celebrate your culture’s food and music with your family and friends.”
