The City’s Planning Committee today approved Official Plan and zoning amendments as well as a heritage permit to facilitate construction of an 18-storey residential building at the northwest corner of Somerset and O’Connor streets. The building would add 156 units and ground-floor commercial space to a highly walkable neighbourhood, re-establishing a continuous streetscape.

To minimize impact on the surrounding community, the slender tower portion would be set back considerably from the building’s base along Somerset Street. The design of the four-storey, red-brick base is inspired by the streetscape and the setback would ensure it echoes the heights of other Somerset Street buildings.

Recommendations from today’s meeting will rise to Council on Wednesday, June 8.
