Mayor Jim Watson, with Councillors Riley Brockington and Jeff Leiper, recognized Ward Tresham and Susan Cameron’s dedication to the community at today’s City Council meeting by presenting them with the Mayor’s City Builder Award.
Ward Tresham is recognized for his volunteerism and the many ways he helps and supports others in the community. He has been a volunteer in many capacities for more than 50 years, including volunteering with the Metropolitan Bible Church, where he was involved with youth mentoring and crisis support, and managed audio-visual setup, production and staging for church events.
For the past five years, Mr. Tresham has volunteered with Hospice Care Ottawa, Maycourt Hospice and the Ruddy Shenkman Hospice. He has done everything from helping with fundraising, homecare and delivering supplies, to cleaning and IT support. He worked with Salus Homecare for the past 28 years, providing delivery services and elder support, and donating his time and skills to support community mental health.
For many years, Mr. Tresham provided lodging and support for ESL exchange students, and he is recognized for being a gracious and kind host who helped students from around the world.
At the onset of the pandemic, Susan Cameron stepped up to help people in the community during this difficult time. She used her organizational and leadership skills to provide members of the community with cloth masks that were in short supply at the time. Ms. Cameron initially found a social media site that offered free cloth masks for everyone in Ottawa, and that led to a coordinated effort to produce and distribute masks with a group known as the Maskateers.
Ms. Cameron reached out for donations of materials to make masks, and she coordinated efforts to distribute the supplies to other volunteers who made free masks for anyone who requested them. She worked tirelessly alongside other coordinators, helping to match requests with volunteers who sewed masks in nearby neighbourhoods.
Agencies that received masks from June 2020 to September 2021 include food banks and cupboards, community agencies, shelters, supportive housing and respite centres. As of September 2021, and under Ms. Cameron’s guidance, 50,000 masks were made by the Maskateers, representing hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations.
The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour, created to recognize an individual, group or organization that, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.
Individuals, groups or organizations may be nominated by Members of Council or the public.
