From now until Wednesday, June 22, children in Ottawa can have their say in naming the new swimming program! The new program is set to launch in January 2023.

The contest will help choose the names of the new levels for the new streams.

Each stream will have its own identity which includes:

  • A selection of colours for the ten swim levels for children between the ages of six and 14
  • Five water-dwelling creatures for pre-school swim lessons for three to five year-olds
  • An option for participants to submit their own ideas for naming the three toddler swim levels for participants under three years of age.

You might notice something extra special about the choice of creatures! The name selection for the pre-school swim lessons were developed in consultation with the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. They are all creatures that can be found living in the Ottawa River. Voting options are listed in the Anishinabemowin Algonquin language, English and French.

Children currently enrolled in a swim program will receive their ballots from their instructor. Ballots can also be requested and submitted at one of 18 locations below:

  • Bob MacQuarrie Rec. Complex - Orléans
  • Brewer Pool
  • CARDELREC Complex (Goulbourn)
  • Deborah Anne Kirwan Pool
