Today, the Transit Commission heard that O-Train Line 1 has consistently achieved over 99 per cent service delivery for the past three months. Key performance indicators show that the May 21 storm was the only significant disruption to service in the past month. The LRT system can meet current and future ridership demands and is a safe and reliable way to move around the city.
Para Transpo ridership continues to rise, with 47,000 customer-trips in May compared to 44,500 customer-trips in April of this year. As Para Transpo ridership continues to increase, Para Transpo will return to the pre-COVID practice of shared rides, when necessary, to meet service demands and accommodate all customers.
Transit Commission was also informed that OC Transpo will soon start to replace current fare readers with new and more convenient technology. The new and improved fare readers will give customers more payment options, including the ability to tap a credit card, mobile wallet and scan the barcode on a transfer or special event ticket. The lifecycle replacement starts next month and all fare readers on buses and inside O-Train stations will have been updated by the end of the year. Expanded payment options will be introduced once the replacements are complete.
Commission members received details on OC Transpo’s no-charge Canada Day service with the main celebrations taking place this year at Lebreton Flats. OC Transpo will be running an enhanced service schedule on Canada Day that will include additional buses to provide more capacity and later evening service on many routes. O-Train Line 1 will run on 15 train service during peak periods and, at the end of the programmed events, will transport customers travelling east from Pimisi Station, and customers travelling west will access bus service on Albert Street. All details will be available on octranspo.com.
OC Transpo will implement its summer service changes on June 26, with service adjustments, seasonal service changes to reflect summer ridership, and detours for Stage 2 O-Train construction. Customers can visit octranspo.com for more information.
The Commission received a financial update on the City’s Zero-Emission Bus (ZEB) Program. The Canada Infrastructure Bank is expected to approve a loan by the end of the month, and the Infrastructure Canada funding agreement is expected to be in place by the end of Q4 2022. Staff will report back to Transit Commission and Council on the final implementation of the ZEB Program.
Transportation Resource Associates Inc. (TRA) provided the Commission with an update on safety oversight work of the LRT system. TRA continues work with OC Transpo and its contractor team, focusing on specific contractor return to service commitments including safety, maintenance planning and responsiveness.
