Ottawa police said three children were inside a home last night when a 40-year-old woman was stabbed and critically wounded. The Ottawa police spousal assault unit was assisting the major crimes unit in the case.
The incident took place just before 5:30 p.m. at a home on Woodridge Crescent in the Bayshore area.
"Our information is that there were three children present in the home," said Insp. Mike Sanford. "What they saw or what they did not see is still yet to be determined."
Insp. Sanford said the children were all under 15 years of age.
The woman, who was rushed to the Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus, had surgery last night and emerged in critical, but stable condition.
The male suspect was in custody, having been arrested near the scene.
It was not clear last night, police said, what was behind the incident.
"We're still at the preliminary stage of this investigation," Insp. Sanford said. "And we're not sure if alcohol or drugs played any part."
The altercation took place partly within a corner unit of a row of townhouses and partly at the front door of the building.
As of last night, police were looking for witnesses.
"From our indications right now there weren't too many people outside when this occurred," Insp. Sanford said.
He said it could have been a very disturbing scene for anyone who might have witnessed it, although he added that in the heat of the moment, incidents like this can spill over from the home.
"When you're dealing with a situation like this where people are in distress, it's kind of difficult to try to contain where exactly it is going to happen."
Last night at the scene, Insp. Sanford said he was waiting for the identification unit.
Yellow police tape surrounded the scene, and Insp. Sanford said police had not yet been through the home, except to go in and remove the three children.
