The flags at Ottawa City Hall and the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre have been lowered to half-mast to mark the passing of Gisèle Lalonde, C.M., O.Ont.
Gisèle Lalonde was mayor of the former City of Vanier from 1985 to 1991 and has always been a strong community activist. She was a pioneer in the field of education in Francophone Ontario. Initially a teacher, she rose through the ranks to be appointed to management roles within Franco-Ontarian schools, and later to positions and committees of increasing importance, first locally and then provincially and nationally. A Franco-Ontarian high school in Orléans, L'École secondaire publique Gisèle Lalonde, bears her name in recognition of her unique contribution to education in French in the province.
The flags will remain at half-mast until sunset on Thursday, July 28.
