Automated Flagger Device provides greater safety to motorists and workers

Automated Flagger Device: A trailer with red and amber signal lights and a gate arm, marked with red stripes and a flag attached to the end of it, which can move up and down.

A new traffic control device for short-term construction and roadwork sites will be seen predominantly on Ottawa’s rural roadways, providing greater safety for motorists and workers. It’s the Automated Flagger Assistance Device (AFAD).

AFAD has a red and amber light signal, and swinging arm gate, which is more visible at a distance by approaching motorists. It also safely moves flagpersons operating the device farther away from live traffic.

What to do when you approach an AFAD

  • If you are approaching an AFAD with amber signal-light flashing with gate arm in the up position, you can proceed.
  • If you see a solid amber signal with the gate arm in the up position, slow down and stop if safe to do so. You can proceed when the signal returns to a flashing amber light.
  • If you see a solid red signal with the gate arm down, all vehicles must stop. You can proceed when the signal returns to a flashing amber and the gate arm returns to the up positions.

Remember, if you are driving on a roadway with construction zones:

  • Follow all road signage and adjusted work-zone speed limits,
  • Always stay alert and exercise caution.

Dedicated workers on these sites have wives, husbands, partners, families and friends, who need them to return home safely from work each day. Don’t speed to save time. Slow down to save a life.
