For more than 400 years, francophones have been an integral part of Ontario society. In 2010, September 25 was officially declared to be Franco-Ontario Day in recognition of the Franco‑Ontarian flag. The flag was raised for the first time on September 25, 1975. Created by Gaétan Gervais and Michel Dupuis, this strong symbol of Francophone Ontario is marking its 47th anniversary this year.
Ontario is home to the largest Francophone community in Canada outside Quebec. More than one quarter Ontario's francophones live right here in Ottawa. The Francophone community in Ottawa is proud of its history, its language, its cultural diversity and its ongoing contribution to political, economic and social life in our beautiful city of Ottawa. This year we also pay tribute to Gisèle Lalonde, a symbol of Francophone resilience who passed away recently, leaving behind an important legacy for current and future Francophones.
Like every year, the city will be adorned with the Franco-Ontarian colours and will host Ottawa residents at Major’s Hill Park on Sunday, September 25 to celebrate the Francophone community and families in Ottawa. The 2022 Festival franco-ontarien invites young and old to a rich and diverse program from September 23 to 25, 2022. The Mayor will mark Franco-Ontarian Day by raising the Franco-Ontarian flag during the Festival franco-ontarien at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 25.
A Franco-Ontarian flag flies permanently at Ottawa City Hall at 110 Laurier Avenue West, over Marion Dewar Plaza, and at the Centre d’accueil Champlain at 275 Perrier Street. Several other City facilities will fly the Franco-Ontarian flag on September 25, 2022, from dawn until dusk, including:
The City will also mark Franco-Ontarian Day by illuminating the OTTAWA sign at York Street and Sussex Drive in the ByWard Market with the colours of the Franco-Ontarian flag, green and white. You are invited to take pictures of the sign and post them on your social networks as a way of celebrating Franco-Ontarian Day.
