Today, officials from the City of Ottawa, the Government of Canada, Arts Court resident partners and private partners gathered to celebrate the final completion of the Arts Court Redevelopment project.
Councillor Mathieu Fleury was joined by the Honourable Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board on behalf of the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Chief Wendy Jocko, Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, and representatives from Arts Court, to unveil a commemorative plaque and tour the facility.
Formerly the Carleton County Courthouse, Arts Court is now a multi-disciplinary arts facility operating as a collaboration between the City of Ottawa and the Residents Steering Committee comprised of nine resident organizations. In 2015, construction began at the facility to add more space for additional programming and amenities, and to bring it up to current accessibility standards.
Quotes
“Art has a strong presence in our city and it is only fitting that the central home for art in Ottawa grows alongside this vibrant community and offers a safe space where residents can explore new types of art through galleries and programming. When I walk through the halls of the completed facility, I feel nothing but pride for what we have built with the support of our partners.”
Mayor Jim Watson
“Back in 1988, the beautiful and historic courthouse was saved from demolition and brought to life as the City’s main hub for the arts. It has been amazing to watch it transform over the years with the art community in a more modern and accessible building. The Arts Court property is Ottawa’s local arts mecca. The investments to support our local arts organisations are well worth it and are already paying dividend for residents of Ottawa and for local artists.”
Councillor Mathieu Fleury (Rideau-Vanier)
“Our government is proud to have been part of this important project for our vibrant artistic community. We have, within these walls, among the finest artists from Ottawa and Canada. Arts Court gives them a place to showcase their works that is worthy of their talent. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who made this possible.”
The Honourable Mona Fortier, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament (Ottawa–Vanier)
