Alcatel cuts 150 more local jobs

French telecom equipment giant Alcatel announced additional job cuts on Wednesday, including another 150 in Ottawa that add to the 110 disclosed in October.

The cuts announced Wednesday affect 900 staff worldwide and are part of an extensive restructuring that has been ongoing for two years.

In early fall Alcatel still reported a global workforce of 75,000, but its restructuring plan calls for it to finish the year with only 60,000.

The cuts in Ottawa will reduce the staff to around 1,750. During the height of the tech boom in 2000, Alcatel's local workforce was in access of 4,000.

The latest cuts hit local staff working in Alcatel's fixed-line communication division. This is the division that has been hardest hit by the downturn in equipment spending by phone companies. On the other hand, Alcatel's products for high-speed Internet have been doing well. This business includes the Digital Subscriber Line products that are the Canadian operation's hallmark.

Company spokeswoman Amy McLeod said the cuts were spread across the local operation and did not result in any product lines being discontinued. She added that the layoffs are to keep costs in line with revenues.

The layoffs follow closely on the heels of the 110 local job cuts announced in October as Alcatel Canada outsources all of its remaining manufacturing operations. That move will see the 140,000-square-foot manufacturing plant at 349 Terry Fox Dr., as well as 96,000 square feet of office space put up for sublease on Jan. 1. All of Alcatel's remaining workforce is being consolidated at its flagship March Road campus.

Alcatel also cut about 60 local R&D staff in May.

Burntsand closes Ottawa office

Toronto-based IT services firm Burntsand Inc. announced Thursday a company restructuring with will see the closure of its Ottawa office.

Burntsand said it is cutting its overall workforce of about 227 by 23 per cent, leaving it with 175 staff.

The Ottawa office employed 15, including a "very strong Web content management team" that sold computer integration services to the federal government.

"Unfortunately our investment in Ottawa has been slower in realizing a reasonable return and, with the current uncertainties associated with this market, we have decided to exit this industry segment," chairman and CEO Jim Yeates said in a statement.

The company said the Ottawa office accounted for about six per cent of the headcount, but generated only two per cent of Burntsand's professional services revenue.

Yeates said the company will focus its business on its strongest partners ? Documentum, Microsoft, Remedy and FrontRange.

The restructuring will incur severance and related charges of $1.6 million against the current quarter.

"Burntsand's cost structure is being adjusted to reflect the current situation," Yeates said. "I believe that these steps place Burntsand into an agile position for future opportunities."

Yeates is chairman and founder of the company. He took back the reins last month with the departure of CEO Mel Steinke.

For the first nine months of the fiscal year, Burntsand's revenues are down 37.7 per cent, to $28.92 million from $46.4 million. The net loss for the first nine months was $4.73 million, or six cents a share.

When the results were reported in October, Steinke said the company doesn't expect to return to profitability on an operating basis until sometime in fiscal 2004.

I think alcatel will close the kanata location sooner or later. No new project, outdated ATM technology. Too bad, newbridge once was the 2nd largest high tech in ottawa.

they still have DSL/VDSL product line which is largely deployed by RBOCs.
