You probably know someone who owns a small business or works at one, and we all enjoy the variety, service and convenience of shopping at local small businesses. In fact, Ottawa has an estimated 28,000 small businesses. So much to choose from! So, in recognition of the 2022 Small Business Week, October 16 to 22, here are five ways to show your support.
Small businesses are most vulnerable in their first months and years of operation, so seek out a new one in your neighbourhood or near the office. Maybe someone has mentioned a new coffee shop, cleaning service or nail salon? While you’re out, beat the crowds and start shopping for Christmas and other holiday gifts now.
Positive ratings or comments on Google are super important to small businesses. If you’ve got kudos to share, consider posting your positive product and service experiences online. It’s as easy as finding the business’ website, locating the ‘Write review’ section and choosing a star rating and/or adding a comment. Many small businesses have their main presence on Facebook, so like and/or share their page.
When you support bars, theatres and other venues with live entertainment, you’re helping the business as well as the artists performing there. Nothing compares to a live performance experience so display your support by treating yourself to a show.
Have a mini staycation by visiting a new part of the city to discover its unique assortment of shops, services and restaurants. Be a bonafide tourist and buy a souvenir! Take public transit there and back and save money on gas. Use OC Transpo’s travel planner to plan your trip.
Did you know that our municipal footprint is so vast that Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver would all fit inside it? In all that geography, there are many rural communities with small businesses, markets and events. Find a map of Ottawa online then zoom in or search for businesses of interest in the rural location of your choice.
